Rules for thee but not for Lee (Timeline)

Jan 30th: A presentation involving social media posts was presented to the School Board.

  • This item was a packet of social media posts by VP Jody Lee.

  • The presenter mentioned members of the community fear retribution, so they are afraid to speak up.

  • Members of the community are concerned due to the following content:

    • Posts that are sexual in nature.

    • Boasting about taking THC gummies and claiming to need bourbon while attending board meetings.

    • Most disturbingly, she has supported violent protests against Israel, "I don't give a fuck whether these kids are peaceful or not!" and liking posts that encourage rioting and taking "bats to every window in the building."

Jan 31st - Current: Concerned citizens write emails to the board.

  • Many people wrote letters asking for Jody to be removed from her position.

  • Example Letter to the School Board.

  • If you are upset by this situation, I encourage you to contact:

Feb 10th the Mercer Island Reporter covered the incident.

"Due to the lack of an existing social media policy in our Board Code of Conduct, the board is not able to review Director Lee’s posts for appropriateness, even if a majority of the board wished to do so."

They are going to have a 3-hour study session on April 24th to discuss putting a policy in place. This meeting will be open to the public. I am supportive of that.

My question for each board member is this:

Do you think these posts are appropriate for someone representing the school district as a director?

How can you continue to push equity and inclusion when it does not apply to your members?
